More than any other Sex and the City character, Miranda’s style has evolved the most. In Sex and the City 2, Miranda, the no-nonsense lawyer and mother of the group is on vacation and at last able to let her hair down and loosen up from her suits.
Although Miranda is still “the one who wears suits,” they’re beautiful suits and jackets with the gorgeous shoes the show is known for. In addition to suits, she wears elegant, work appropriate dresses in both silk and more substantial fabrics.
As for Miranda’s off-work and vacation clothing, she has branched out into bold tribal and ethnic prints in opulent fabrics. (Look for more of this fabric trend in the fall!) Edgy dresses in silk jersey are also star players in her wardrobe. And Miranda’s accessories are earthy, fun and a little bit funky.
Color is absolutely key to Miranda’s style. With her fabulous red hair and green eyes, she is always certain to wear autumnal colors as well as red, royal blue, and black.
While most women I meet love how daring Carrie is with her style, I have to admit, Miranda is inching up on Carries heels…Louboutin heels that is!
The second most hotly debated topic in regard to professional dress surrounds open-toed shoes in the spring and summer. (
Check out the biggest debate.) For the most professional appearance, wear closed toed shoes. I can hear everyone groaning already, but there are a few reasons closed-toed shoes are more professional than open-toes or sandals.
First, skin is distracting, and wearing sandals exposes a lot of skin. To further that, toes are distracting. I know that sounds a little odd, but it’s true. Your feet are a long way from your face. Forgoing open-toed shoes will help keep attention at your face and to what you’re saying.
Another reason to avoid sandals in a professional setting is that they can convey leisure. If you’re doing business, it’s important to show you’re ready to do business.
All of that said, I know how irresistible it may be to lighten up your look for summer. Here are a few tips:
- Always check your company dress code before you make any changes to your attire.
- If you always wear pumps, a sling back, closed-toe pump can be a nice change.
- The most professional open-toe shoe is a peep toe pump. The next contender would

If you're looking for a quick update for you winter professional or casual wardrobe, think tights! They're far more modern than pantyhose. They're also warmer and much, much more comfortable. (If you don't find them comfortable, try going up a size and they'll stay up better.) I also find psychological comfort in the fact that I can easily tug them on, and I don't have to worry about them running.
Although tights are nothing new to fall fashion, here are a few ideas to change your look with tights.
- Add black tights and dressy boots to your basic business suit.
- Try cranberry or another dark neutral to mix things up a bit.
- Wear patterned or lacy tights if you work in a creative field. Pair them with solid skirts or mix them with another pattern for a completely unique look.
I encourage you to dust off your skirts and dresses, buy some tights, and get more mileage out of your winter wardrobe.
